Places of interest in Magdeburg

Famous names dominate the more than 1.200-year history of the Ottostadt Magdeburg. The city was Emperor Otto the Great’s favourite residence, and Otto von Guericke – who invented the air pump – once determined the fate of the city as its mayor. But the name Ottostadt, which Magdeburg has only recently adopted, actually alludes to much more: an attitude towards life, hospitality. A very warm welcome indeed!

The Cathedral of Saints Maurice and Catherine

Magdeburg Cathedral is the city's most famous landmark: the first Gothic cathedral to be built in Germany and still one of the biggest churches in the country. Its origins can be traced back to 937, when Emperor Otto the First founded a monastery in honour of St. Mauritius. He went on to extend the church building in 955 and elevated it to cathedral status in 968. In 1207, the Ottonian cathedral was severely damaged in a great fire. It took until 1362 for the rebuilt Gothic church to be consecrated, and the 101-metre-high west towers were not completed until 1520. The cathedral has been Protestant since 1567.

THE GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG

A must-see for visitors to the city, this ensemble of irregularly shaped facades and modern design – an attraction, fantasy building and work of art rolled into one – was one of the last architectural works created by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG was ceremonially inaugurated on 3 October 2005. It is located on Breiter Weg. Hundertwasser's aim of creating "an oasis for humanity and for nature within a sea of rational buildings", an artistic and cultural statement in the city of Magdeburg, polarised public opinion right from the offset.

Magdeburg Museum of Cultural History

Magdeburg’s Museum of Cultural History celebrated its 100th birthday in 2006. Despite severe damage and significant losses in its inventory during World War II, the museum has continued to fascinate visitors, and has become even more attractive since its restoration.

The museum presents itself mainly as a memorial to Otto the Great, and is internationally known due to its outstanding special exhibitions. After the successful Council of Europe exhibition in 2001 and the state exhibition in 2006, the 2012 state exhibition will undoubtedly be another highlight in the series of large medieval exhibitions.

Magdeburg Water Bridge

Rothensee lock, the longest canal bridge in Europe across the river Elbe (918m), and the double lock near Hohenwarthe all form part of a gargantuan river traffic project in the heart of the countryside. It is designed to connect a series of waterways in order form a directly navigable route from Hannover to Berlin.

This new place of interest, known as the Magdeburg Water Bridge, was officially opened on 10 October 2003 and now has large numbers of ships passing through it every day. Fitting in perfectly with the region's 'Blue Ribbon' campaign highlighting the delights of the river Elbe, the water bridge is sure to attract tourists and water sports fans from around the world not only to Saxony-Anhalt but to Magdeburg itself. It's worth making the trip to see this impressive feat of engineering for the surrounding countryside alone, which is absolutely captivating.
