Known as the 'Pearl of the Romanesque Road', the nearly 1000-year-old Romanesque building complex continues to impress visitors today. Construction of the ensemble, the core of which has survived until the present, began in 1063-1064 as a replacement for the original buildings constructed in 1017-1018.
The monastery was completed in 1129, while subsequent construction of an early gothic vault began in 1220. The west wing, which was destroyed during the Second World War, was rebuilt during the 1960s. The art museum was established in 1974 and has become one of the most important locations for the presentation of sculpture and contemporary art in Saxony-Anhalt. A library is also located at the monastery. Its inventory includes books from the old monastery school library that date back to the early 17th century.
